Packing panniers for a 15-mile weekend escape felt like prepping for an epic expedition—though in reality, we were heading to a cozy B&B with friends, local eats and lakeside rides waiting for us. Jim and I have really come to appreciate these micro-adventures, often centered around our e-bikes. From gliding through Lake Mary’s weekend markets to soaking in the coastal charm of New Smyrna Beach, we’re enjoying the chance to explore nearby gems. Now that Jim’s retired, and we’re no longer in the throes of parenting young boys, we’ve started to reprioritize slow-paced fun and local discoveries—sometimes on two wheels, sometimes with the bikes strapped to the back of the car.

We’re not alone. As  The New Cycle of Innovation [page 18] points out, “Electric bicycles employ an electrified drive system that augments the rider’s pedaling power,” making biking more accessible and enjoyable for all kinds of riders. E-bikes have opened up new terrain for us—literally and figuratively. “E-bikes allow people to ride farther distances and arrive...less sweaty,” which we especially appreciate when lunch is the next stop on the itinerary.

Our love for spontaneous outdoor adventures has me appreciating another kind of cultivated landscape—one that’s edible. Edible Landscapes [page 16] explores how food forests—whether in backyard plots or patio containers—create a thriving, regenerative ecosystem that supports pollinators, neighbors, and dinner plans. As Maria Rodale reminds us, “No plot of land is too small to start a magic garden.” Whether it’s a few pots of herbs or a canopy of fruit trees, the idea of gardening with nature, not just for ourselves, adds a whole new layer to outdoor joy.

This month’s issue is bursting with sunny-day inspiration. Kick off your mornings with Protein-Forward Breakfasts [page 24] that fuel your day and help keep cravings in check. Give your pups some TLC with Alleviating Arthritis in Dogs [page 22], where gut health takes center stage. And rediscover nature’s playground in The Power of Outdoor Play [page 20], packed with ideas that build curiosity, resilience, and mud-streaked memories. Find more online exclusives at my-NA.com, including Sun-Kissed, Not Stressed with tips to help your skin stay radiant and refreshed. I hope this issue sparks your next summer escape—even if it’s just down the road.

See you on the trail (or the brunch patio),
