Working With a Full Pantry (of Wisdom)

I still talk to her sometimes—usually mid-crisis, like a recipe gone wrong or a hot flash with a side of existential dread. And I always hear her answer. My mom passed in 2016, but her wisdom pops up constantly—especially when I’m not looking for it. She’s the reason I’m in natural health to begin with. Long before it was cool, she was ditching saccharine, avoiding Teflon, and sneaking probiotics into our lives like it was her full-time job. She didn’t wait for health to happen; she sought it out and made it her mission. She even traveled to Dr. Christiane Northrup’s clinic for bioidentical hormones and reversed her osteoporosis. As Women in Bloom[page 16] reminds us, “Hormone fluctuations are a natural part of every woman’s life,” and my mom taught me not just to survive them—but to work with them.
When I hit college and bought my first sugary cereal (the kind she never let in the house), I learned the hard way: sugar crash, 8 a.m. nap in Bio 101. Mom was right. Again. Her voice still pipes up when I reach for snacks—now backed by articles like Healthy Cravings [page 20], which urges us to “choose nourishment over numbness.” I can practically hear her say it—with a side of hummus and carrot sticks. Listening to cravings with curiosity and kindness was one of her superpowers.
What I’ve come to realize is that I’m not just remembering her—I’m channeling her. That blend of science, instinct and a well-stocked veggie drawer lives on. As Wisdom for Women puts it, wise elders “make their greatest contribution...by being a powerful example of what it means to embrace aging and the wisdom it provides.” That was her. My hero in sensible shoes and a Nutrition Action subscription.
