Grapefruit – It’s Not Just for Breakfast

Apr 04, 2011 06:18PM ● By Dr. Hsiu S. Chen

Grapefruit is an excellent source for nutrients including vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene. It has been touted as a weight loss aid in the grapefruit diet and has been reported to help lower cholesterol. But did you know that grapefruit is also good for pain relief, relaxation and sleep enhancement?

This is due to its high levels of salicylate, a group of painkilling drugs that are derivatives of salicylic acid. Originally derived from salicin, the active ingredient in willow bark, salicylate has been used for centuries in the treatment of pain and fever. Methyl salicylate is a key component used in rubbing liniments to soothe muscular aches. Sodium salicylate has been traditionally used in the treatment of arthritis.

For small areas, such as, finger, hand, wrist, foot or ankle pain: cut up one full grapefruit into small pieces, add to hot water and soak for 15 minutes. For whole body aches and pains or to promote relaxation and sleep: cut up 4-5 grapefruits in a full bath and soak for 15 minutes.
