Make Space for Holiday Cheer

The holiday season brings more into our homes, including decorations, packages, gatherings and guests. But before adding another thing, consider starting with the opposite: creating space.
In feng shui, the way energy, or qi, moves through a home is fundamental. Spaces that feel crowded or difficult to navigate can also feel visually and energetically heavy. Clearing unnecessary items and opening pathways help a home feel lighter, calmer and more welcoming before holiday decorating even begins.
Start with your entry. This is where you and your guests first experience your home. For the holidays, clear shoes, packages or anything that makes the area feel congested. Then look at the spaces where people naturally gather. Could a piece of furniture be repositioned to make conversation easier? Is there something you could remove temporarily rather than decorate around?
Pay attention to what you see as you move through your home. A beautiful bowl, fresh greenery or a favorite object given a little breathing room can have more impact than an abundance of seasonal décor. Maybe you can simply add a "splash of holidays" to an existing piece you love.
Finally, consider how you want your home to feel during the holidays. Joyful? Peaceful? Warm? Connected? Let that intention guide what you bring into your space. Use it as a framework or theme if you feel overwhelmed.
Holiday decorating doesn’t have to mean filling every available surface. Sometimes creating room for celebration begins by creating room, period.
This season, before you decorate your home, give it a little space to breathe. You may find that what you remove is just as important as what you add.
