Overcrowded Brevard Animal Shelter Seeks Community Help

Brevard County’s only county-operated animal shelter is urgently calling on the community for support as overcrowding reaches critical levels. Built decades ago to house 80 pets, the shelter currently cares for more than 150 dogs, with many kennels doubled up in tight spaces. Cortney Larson has launched a petition urging the County Commission to address the shelter’s capacity and staffing challenges. “We are not here to place blame,” says Larson. “We just want a plan that ensures these animals are treated humanely and have a chance at finding homes.”

In addition to signing the petition, residents can help by volunteering to walk dogs, joining the Adoption Ambassador program, or taking a shelter dog out for a short-term outing to enjoy fresh air and socialization. “Every hour outside the shelter makes a difference,” says shelter representative Lisa Pack. Opportunities range from a few hours to a weekend, and the shelter provides food and vet care for participating dogs.
