5K Run/Walk to Create Community Awareness of Food Allergies

The 2nd Annual F.A.R.M. 5K Run/Walk  “Nature vs. Nurture” will be held Saturday, August 15 at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at 7:30 a.m. The race is produced by the local non-profit Food Allergy Resources & Mentoring (FARM) whose mission is create public awareness of the growing food allergy epidemic and provide a voice to those living with food allergies.

This is the first year that the race will be held at the photographer’s haven, Ritch Grissam Memorial Wetlands, a hard-packed dirt course among Native Floridian wildlife lending to the theme of “nature vs. nurture.” “There’s a harmony between running an off-road course among native Floridian wildlife, and day to day life living with a life threatening food allergy,” says FARM’s president Lisa Ficke. The course provides ample room for parking, sponsors and vendors at the finish line.

Founded in 2014, Food Allergy Resources & Mentoring (FARM) is the first Florida based non-profit addressing the growing food allergy epidemic. “1 in 13 children have a food allergy today and that numbers is rising,” says Ficke. “With roughly 2 kids per classroom affected and no local resources for these families, FARM works to create inclusive events that promote understanding and support to families affected by food allergies.”
