Free Youth Event Focuses on Protecting Indian River Lagoon

The 2026 Youth Action Assembly brings students together September 12 to learn about challenges facing the Indian River Lagoon and develop practical ways to help protect the watershed. The free event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Environmental Learning Center in Vero Beach and is open to students in grades 7 through 12.

Participants will explore water quality, pollution, habitat loss and restoration through maps, data and discussions with scientists, conservationists, educators and local advocates. Small-group sessions will focus on areas such as pollution reduction, habitat restoration, community education and policy engagement. Students will then develop actions they can carry out in their schools, neighborhoods or online communities and present their plans to the full group.

No science background or previous environmental activism is required. Participants should care about where they live and be willing to work alongside others who feel the same. Participants are expected to attend the full day and commit to at least one action following the event.
