Brevard Zoo Leads Local Shorebird Conservation Efforts

Brevard Zoo announces its new role as lead partner in the Space Coast Shorebird Partnership, reinforcing its dedication to protecting native wildlife. The zoo is collaborating with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Florida Shorebird Alliance (FSA) to monitor shorebirds and seabirds along the coastline and on rooftops throughout Brevard County.

Dedicated volunteers will be actively monitoring native bird species populations, including least terns and black skimmers. This work is integral to the health of local shorebirds. Population counts provide important data and allow the zoo and its partners to better understand various factors, such as the effects of habitat loss, predation and pollution on these populations. Based on the statistics gathered, FSA partners can implement improved data-driven management strategies and develop conservation guidelines to support these species.

The partnership reflects Brevard Zoo’s growing role in ecological stewardship and invites community members to take part in meaningful conservation work.
