Psoriasis: A Misunderstood Condition
Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition and, as with all autoimmune conditions, it is not idiopathic (arising from an unknown cause). Autoimmune conditions are a culmination of multiple causes and system breakdowns that synergize into a pro-inflammatory autoimmune response.
The frequent misconception that psoriasis is a skin condition can lead to ineffective treatments. Our skin, nails, and joints can be victims of the immune system. Of all the factors contributing to psoriasis, (hormone imbalance, food allergies, xenobiotic toxins, dysbiosis) dysbiosis is the major initiator. When the intestines contain the balance of good and bad bacteria that is optimal for good health, they are described as being in a state of symbiosis. Alternatively, dysbiosis is a condition when a non-acute, non-infectious host micro-organism adversely affects the host. This overgrowth of the bad bacteria can push a patient’s immune system into overdrive causing a wide array of problems, psoriasis included.
Bacteria overgrowth happens primarily in the gut. According to the National Institutes of Health, we carry approximately 10 trillion microorganisms in our gut, more than 10 times the total number of cells in our bodies. Some studies claim these gut bacteria can weigh up to 3 pounds. It is essential to heal the gastrointestinal tract to restore immune health.
Metabolic testing is a tool that can be used to locate the root cause of immune malfunction. Blood tests can identify food sensitivities, autoimmune reactivity, intestinal permeability, overgrowth of bad bacteria, yeast, and parasites, and uric acid levels. Stool tests can reveal an overgrowth of blood bacteria, yeast, parasites, and H-Pylori. Once the problem areas are located, lifestyle changes such as diet modification, supplementation, upper cervical chiropractic care and detoxification can be implemented to naturally restore health.
