Hanging with the Gals

Document Actions

Did you know that hanging out with the gals can help relieve stress?

A landmark UCLA study suggests that women respond to stress with a cascade of brain chemicals that cause us to make and maintain friendships with other women. Traditionally it was believed that stress triggered either a “fight” or a “flight” response. Now it’s believed that women have a larger behavioral repertoire. “In fact,” says Dr. Klein, “it seems that when oxytocin is released as part of the stress response in women, it buffers the fight or flight response and encourages her to gather her children and cluster with other women.” Women’s estrogen levels seem to enhance this effect of oxytocin.

Men, on the other hand, when confronted with stress produce high levels of testosterone, which seems to inhibit the effects of oxytocin.
