Hot Rocks Hit the Spot
Heated Stone Massage has its foundations in the sweat lodges of Native Americans, the ancient Polynesians and the Far East. They were used as ancient tools for treating dozens of ailments. Native Americans used heated stones in ceremonial sweat lodges. They would also use stones heated by the sun to relieve cramps and muscular pain. In 1998, heated stone therapy began gaining in popularity and is now being used in spas all over the world.
Heated stone massage involves the application of varying sizes of water-heated basalt stones heated to a temperature of 125 – 135, which are placed on key points on the body. The application of hot stones to an area penetrates the tissues deeper, softens the muscles and releases toxins.
Physiologically, the science of stone therapy has been proven highly beneficial. Heated stones are reputed to initiate the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which slows down the heart rate, relaxes inner organs, increases blood flow and boosts immune and lymphatic systems. The direct heat relaxes muscles, allowing manipulation of a greater intensity than with regular massage. Profound feelings of balance, serenity and wholeness are experienced immediately and can last for weeks. Heated stone massage is excellent for improvement of the following symptoms: muscular aches, pains, sprains and strains, poor circulation, arthritic conditions, stress, anxiety and tension.
