According to Gabriel Cousens, a medical doctor and author of Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine, "A live foods diet decreases inflammation, slows the aging process, increases immunity and energy and results in increased mental, physical and spiritual well-being." Wow, you had me at "slows the aging process." That list of benefits is hard to resist. Just one question, is ice cream on this diet?

As the publisher of a natural health magazine you might think I have a lock on perfect health. But the truth is, as I learn more with each issue, it can be a struggle to figure out how to integrate new initiatives into my already busy life. Adopting a raw food lifestyle sounds like an overwhelming prospect. It is hard to know where to begin. It may be as simple as one soup, snack, and meal at a time. To help make this nutritious transition easier we’ve listed some local raw resources on page 26.

On the national front, with the change in administration, the issue of food in America is receiving more of the national spotlight. Michele Obama’s focus on a White House garden and nutrition brings attention to a long overdue conversation about where and how Americans get their food. According to acclaimed author and journalist Michael Pollan in our Wisewords column on page 18, "You have the food industry that is trying to replace real food, which isn’t very profitable to sell, with processed food, which is much more profitable to sell. Over time, the new products getting to the supermarket tend to be more of the edible food-like substances." Michael Pollan’s advice, "Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food."

This issue features Natural Foods and it is jam packed with great information to help you clean up your diet. Explore the raw life in our feature article on page 23. Enjoy our 10 tips for eating raw on page 28. Find out what is ripe this summer and how to find it locally on page 20. And then consider our national food system and the impact it has on all of us on page 18. This summer is the perfect time to try incorporating more raw food into your diet. As you enjoy the bountiful and delicious summer produce, your body will thank you.

Here’s to a yummy summer!
