2007 June Letter
Recently my husband went away for a weekend visit with his family. As my son Kyle was realizing how this would impact his weekend plans he pointed out with unabashed honesty, “Mom, it is more fun when you go way and Dad stays home.” It’s true, being with my kids while my husband is away at work or on a trip is routine for me. When the roles are reversed my husband, Jim, considers it his mission to entertain the boys. Jim is still a kid at heart and he loves to play. All the boys in my house are interested in similar activities so it works well for them that one is actually a grown up. While swimming in the pool they make up new games involving beach balls and light sabers, invent new ways to enter the pool and create different races from one side to the other. When they are worn out they retire to the computer room for a round of games or relax watching an episode of Nova or Mythbusters.
My idea of fun is an evening at the dance studio. If I’m feeling stressed a couple hours on the dance floor literally melts the tension away. One of my first dance memories is with my father. When I was a little girl he would let me stand on his feet, wrap my arms around him and hang on while he turned in a circle. I remember it as one of my favorite things to do. Now I am able to teach my father some dance moves. At one family gathering we put on some of my father’s favorite country music and I showed them how to two-step their way through my living room. We had a great time and some laughs as we took turns on our impromptu dance floor. My dad can still move to the music and this time I didn’t step on his feet!
This month we celebrate men. For this issue we consulted one of our favorite pioneers in integrative medicine, Dr. Andrew Weil, for words of wisdom on men’s health. Discover the top ten risk reducers for prostate cancer on page 32. Plus, enjoy insights into yoga for men in our exclusive interview with one of today’s best known names in yoga, Rodney Yee. With Father’s Day just around the corner it is a great time to do something special for the men in your life. Find a way to celebrate them and in the words of Lee Ann Womack – I hope you dance!
Happy Father’s Day!
