January 2010 Letter

If you ask me my age, be prepared to wait a spell while I calculate it. These days there are certain things I just don’t retain in memory. I watch a movie, enjoy it, and then promptly forget it. When someone asks me if I’ve seen a certain movie, if it has been more than six months I have to check with my husband to find out. These small memory lapses I can live with. In fact, forgetting movies has the added benefit of being able to watch them the second time and fully enjoy them again! When I started forgetting what I needed at the grocery store and it was on my list, then I looked for help.

According to our anti-aging article on page 25, "By age 40, reports the Alzheimer’s Association, two-thirds of us experience occasional lapses of memory." Luckily, we don’t have to be a statistic, there are many actions we can take that will slow the process of aging. The practitioners advertised in this magazine are a fabulous resource. Over the years I have learned from them through their articles or personal attention. Adjustments in my diet, exercise, and supplements have been key to boosting my memory and improving my overall health. Adding omega-3 really jumpstarted my brain and got me back on track. I am so grateful to have access to so many knowledgeable and caring natural health practitioners through Natural Awakenings.

The bottom line, when it comes to maintaining my health it always comes back to one thing: making the time to take care of myself. With the start of a new year, it is the perfect time to consider one or two changes in routine that will keep me feeling younger. Taking the time to plan healthy meals and improve my exercise routine top the list.

This issue’s focus is Integrative Health. We bring you thoughts on the future of healthcare from internationally renowned physician and bestselling author Dr. Andrew Weil. You’ll also find tips for staying young for you and your pet. Then our article on page 27 offers inspiration to brainstorm your New Year intentions.

As we enter 2010, I want to thank each of you for your participation in Natural Awakenings magazine. Readers, advertisers, distributors, contributors – you all make up our natural health community and all of us here at Natural Awakenings are grateful for you.

Happy New Year!
