June 2009 Letter
"I have got to find a way to start exercising," said my husband with exasperation as he patted his midsection. Jim has a lengthy commute and works long days making it a challenge to integrate any regular exercise regimen. With age comes a less resilient physique that demands attention. Luckily, age also brings wisdom and creativity, so he is finding ways to incorporate a run or swim when he can. My son, Ryan, is also focused on his own fitness plan and is excited about joining the YMCA this summer. This plan offers a fringe benefit for me; I will have to drive him to the gym, so I have decided to embrace this as my opportunity for a little Zumba or yoga in my summer schedule.
Our family fitness routine is continually evolving as our boys grow and their interests develop. They run the gamut from fencing to football with, of course, video games topping the list. For my husband, golf is his passion. He told me golf is his meditation time. Thinking he was trying a new angle to spend more time on the golf course, I looked at him curiously with one eyebrow raised while I considered what he was trying to say. As I thought about my state-of-mind while I practice dance, I had to agree. Steve Taylor confirms this phenomenon in our Inspiration column on page 17. He points out that sports can generate a state called the ‘flow’. "This occurs when our attention is completely absorbed in an activity and awareness of our surroundings and our selves fade away. Chaotic thought chatter gives way to inner peace and a sense of being energized and more alive than usual," explains Steve.
In this issue we focus on men’s health. Our feature article provides expert advice from top integrative physicians who specialize in heart health, sexual wellness, and prostate protection. Discover their best natural healing tips for men on page 24. Show the man in your life you care with our ideas for do-it-yourself Father’s Day gifts under $10 in the Healthy Kids column. Then, discover how to eat like a "flexitarian" in our Conscious Eating column on page 22. You’ll even find some healthy recipes. This month I hope you find an activity that generates your state of ‘flow’ and inner peace.
Happy Father’s Day!
